70K petrol pumps across India won’t buy fuel from OMCs today
Nearly 70,000 petrol pumps across 24 states in the country will not buy petrol and diesel from Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) on Tuesday, May 31 in protest against no revision in their commission despite the hike in petrol and diesel prices.
Anurag Jain, President of the Delhi Petrol Dealers Association, said at a press conference on Monday that the decision is unlikely to affect retail supply to consumers as pumps usually have stock for two days and will continue to sell fuel on Tuesday (May 31).
Petrol dealers in 24 states are part of the protest: –
- Tamil Nadu
- Karnataka
- Kerala
- Telangana
- Andhra Pradesh
- Delhi
- Punjab
- Haryana
- Rajasthan
- Gujarat
- Maharashtra
- Himachal Pradesh
- Bihar
- Assam
- Meghalaya
- Arunachal Pradesh
- Mizoram
- Nagaland
- Manipur
- Tripura
- Sikkim
- North Bengal
- Uttar Pradesh
- Madhya Pradesh
Petroleum firms are making big profits, according to pump owners, after raising retail prices of petrol and diesel, but there has been no increase in dealer commissions. Dealer organisations claim that the margin for dealers should be changed every six months under the agreement between Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and dealers, but this has not happened since 2017. During this time, the retail price of petrol and diesel has nearly doubled.
Not only this, the dealers had to double their capital for the business during this time, which required them to take out more loans, with higher interest rates. Today, the oil will not be purchased from companies at 400 fuel pumps in Delhi and 6,500 in Maharashtra.
On retail sales of petrol and diesel, petrol pump dealers currently receive a commission of Rs 2.90 per litre and Rs 1.85 per litre, respectively. According to Anurag Jain, firms hiked the commission by Re 1 per litre in 2017, with 40 paise deducted as a licence fee.
“We have been burdened with all expenses, including electricity bills, employee salaries, and bank charges, for the past five years. As a result, we have chosen this way of protest, so that the companies consider our demands” According to Anurag Jain, President of the Delhi Petrol Dealers Association.
