SpaceX to collaborate with Indian companies to manufacture satellite communications gear
As it prepares to launch its high-speed Starlink satellite broadband services in India next year, Elon Musk‘s SpaceX wants to work with Indian firms to locally manufacture satellite communications equipment, including antenna systems and user terminal devices.
Matt Botwin, director (market access with the Starlink program), said on 12th July during SpaceX’s 1st official contact with Department of Telecommunications (DoT) secretary Anshu Prakash that the company is happy to hear ways to collaborate with the Indian industry to manufacture products for its Starlink devices.
SpaceX has always searched for methods to improve its worldwide supply chain efficiency, according to Botwin, and it is now looking forward to working with its Indian partners because it sees those potential.
The Department of Transportation had scheduled a conference with global satellite firms to develop a comprehensive roadmap for local communications gear manufacture as well as a regulatory framework for global LEO satellite constellation operators. Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea, OneWeb, Airtel, Viasat, Hughes, the Department of Space, and the TRAI attended the meeting, along with SpaceX.
During the discussion, Botwin stated that SpaceX has long worked with the Indian industrial sector. He stated that the business has been purchasing steel and steel tubing from India for many of its rockets and that the corporation is now dedicated to manufacturing hardware, satellite components, and components of (satellite broadband) networks in India.
For a refundable deposit of around INR 7,000, SpaceX has begun accepting pre-orders for the beta version of Starlink satellite internet service in India. While the company plans to provide satellite broadband services in India in 2022, this is subject to regulatory approvals.
The coveted 28 GHz spectrum, which covers the frequencies of 27.5 to 29.5 GHz, is presently only utilized by satellite operators, but it is thought to be a highly efficient band for 5G services.
Telcos have frequently informed the Department of Telecommunications that the lack of a 28 GHz spectrum might jeopardize India’s 5G business case. They said that without these frequencies, 5G implementation costs will double, making the country’s ultra-fast wireless internet service expensive.
