India to introduce e-passport soon: Here’s how chip-based passport work?
Sanjay Maurya
India will soon start issuing e-passports which will use Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) and biometrics. The new e-passport, according to Sanjay Bhattacharya, Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, would safeguard biometric data and comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization’s regulations (ICAO).
The passport jacket will have an electronic chip on which important security information will be encrypted. India currently provides printed booklets in the form of passports to its citizens. Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar had previously stated that the government has begun conversations with the ‘India Security Press’ about the concept of distributing chip-enabled e-passports to residents. “We recommend prioritising the production of e-passports so that a new passport booklet with increased security features can be pushed out soon,” the minister added.
The Following Is What We Know So Far About India’s E-Passport Project
- The applicants’ personal information would be digitally signed and kept on the passport booklet’s chip.
- Any tampering with the chip will result in the passport authentication failing.
- The e-passports will be produced in Nashik, India, by India Security Press.
- Up till now, passports in the country are issued in the form of personalized printed booklets.
- On June 25, 2008, the Indian Passport Authority issued the first e-passport in India to then-President of India Pratibha Patil.
The following are some of the advantages of the e-passport:
- Biometric data will be used to secure the e-passport.
- It will enable smooth passage through immigration posts worldwide.
- The e-passport will meet the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) requirements.
- The e-chip passport will prevent illegal data transfer using radio-frequency identification (RFID).
- Identity theft and forgery will be deterred by the e-passport.
How can I apply for an e-passport in India?
The processes for applying for an e-passport will stay the same, from filling out an application form on the government website to selecting a place and date for your document verification appointment. The timing of issuance will also be unaffected by the new system.
