Twitter introduces downvote button globally: Here’s how it works
By Sanjay Maurya
Have you noticed a new downvote button on Twitter that glows orange when clicked? You are not alone for sure. The downvote option has started rolling out globally, so it should now be available to everyone.
The function, which was previously only available to a small set of users, is now open to everyone. According to the company, this experimental function has received a favourable response and has assisted them in determining what material users want to watch and read on the platform. Twitter began testing downvotes with web users in 2021, and the microblogging service is now preparing to make the feature available to iOS and Android users as well.

Initially, Twitter provided different downvoting options. It had both upvote and downvote buttons so that users could see which was the most popular for specific content. Thumbs up and thumbs down buttons were also shown to some of the testers.
The majority of users used the downvote button when they thought a tweet was insulting or irrelevant, according to the study. According to Twitter, “this experiment also demonstrated that downvoting is the most often utilised approach for individuals to mark information they don’t want to see.”
Twitter, on the other hand, has stated that downvote numbers would not be displayed on tweets and that the data will be utilised by the platform to enhance user experience. YouTube recently took a similar step and hiding public dislike countson videos throughout the platform to protect smaller creators from dislike assaults and abuse.
This will foster “respectful interactions between viewers and creators,” according to the business. The downvote button “improves the quality of interactions on Twitter,” according to Twitter, which is why it is being made available to a larger audience. This also hints that the social media behemoth may make this a permanent option for users in the future.
The hate or downvote option is not available on other prominent social networking networks such as Instagram. You can choose to hide Like counts and comments on the platform. The downvote option was tested by Facebook in 2018, but it was not made permanent. Reddit users can upvote or downvote any content on the platform.
