Google to shut down Hangouts after 9 years; advice to save data
Google replaced the Hangouts app with the new ‘Google Chat’ for Workspace users in February. The company is now set to completely shut down the old Hangouts later this year, moving all existing users of the platform to Google Chat. Google announced in a new blog post that Hangouts will be taken down in November 2022, and users on desktop and mobile will be asked to migrate to Google Chat before November.
Google has started sending in-app notifications to Hangouts mobile users asking them to switch to Chat in Gmail or the Chat app. Users of the Hangouts Chrome extension will also be asked to switch to Chat on the web or download the Chat web app. Google is also encouraging users to use Google Takeout, the company’s data exportation tool, to download their data. Also, users who use Hangouts on Gmail on the web will be upgraded to Chat in Gmail next month.
“We have continued to invest in Chat to help people better collaborate and express themselves, and now we are taking steps to help remaining Hangouts users move to Chat,” Ravi Kanneganti, Product Manager, Google Chat, said in a blogpost. The search giant also mentioned that Hangouts on the web will continue to be available until the end of this year. Compared to Hangouts, Google Chat offers many new features, including side-by-side editing of Docs, Slides, and Sheets. Additionally, it has Spaces, which is a dedicated place for topic-based collaboration. Chats enable groups and teams to discuss ideas, work on documents, and manage files and tasks, all from a single location.
In the upcoming months, you’ll see even more features for Chat, such as direct calling, in-line threading in Spaces, and the capacity to share and see multiple photos, according to Google’s blog post. The company noted, “We hope users will appreciate our continued investment in making Chat a powerful place to create and collaborate as we take this final step to migrate remaining Hangouts users to Chat.” Hangouts users will also see a notification on the platform for at least one month before Hangouts Web is removed. Thereafter, Hangouts Web will automatically begin redirecting visitors to Google Chat Web.
