India slips to 107th place in global hunger index, behind Pakistan; full list here
India has slipped to 107th position out of 121 countries on the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2022 released on Saturday (October 15) after being ranked 101st last year. India ranked behind all South Asian countries except war-torn Afghanistan. It is surprising to know in the report that Pakistan and Sri Lanka, which are facing financial crisis and hunger, are in a much better ranking than India. Taliban-ruled Afghanistan is the only South Asian country below India.
According to the report, jointly by Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organization Welt Hunger Hilfe, the level of hunger in India is ” serious”. The value indicators that the index comprises show a steep decline in the last 22 years. India got 29.1score in GHI. The situation in four countries- Burundu, South Sudan, Somalia, and Syria- has been categorized as “extremely alarming.”
According to the ranking shared on the official website of the Global Hunger Index, seventeen countries including Belarus, Hungary, China, Turkey, and Kuwait were placed at the top of the list. The countries below India in the Global Hunger Index are Zambia, Afghanistan, Timor-Leste, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, Lesotho, Liberia, Niger, Haiti, Chad, Dem. Rep. of the Congo, Madagascar, Central African Republic, Yemen. The report said thatthe rank could not be determined for 15 countries including Guinea, Mozambique, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Somalia, South Sudan, and Syria, due to lack of data.
The first Global Hunger Index (GHI)report was published in 2006 and calculated on four indicators — undernourishment; child wasting (the share of children under the age of 5 who are wasted i.e who have low weight for their height, reflecting acute undernutrition); child stunting (children under the age of 5 who have low height for their age, reflecting chronic undernutrition) and child mortality (the mortality rate of children under the age of 5).
