Elon Musk announces Neuralink to start integrating a sophisticated chip in people’s brains
Elon Musk, a tech tycoon, has stated that his business Neuralink will start a clinical trial of a brain chip implant in a human brain in the next six months. Modern technology, which is still in the research and development stage, will assist individuals with disabilities in moving and speaking more effortlessly. Further, according to Musk, it will aid in the recovery of eyesight for patients who are partially blind. Musk stressed the quickness with which the business is creating its product during a nearly three-hour presentation to a select group of invited guests at Neuralink’s headquarters.
Musk stated at a long-awaited public update on the device, “We want to be really meticulous and ensure that it will work properly before putting a device into a human.” “At first, progress may appear painfully slow, particularly as it relates to humans, but we are doing everything in parallel to get it to scale,” he continued. As a result, in theory, progress should be exponential.
According to Musk, the first two human applications for the Neuralink gadget would be to restore vision and to allow those who are unable to move their muscles to do so. “We believe we can still restore eyesight even if someone has never had vision, ever, like they were born blind,” he said.
How does the technology function?
The business is developing a brand-new class of robots called a “Surgical robot (R1)” that will quickly cut a piece of the human skull in order to insert the cutting-edge chip. The N1 chip is a tiny microprocessor that can capture and simulate the host’s brain activity and will be installed permanently into the brain of a human. The ear will be surrounded by small electrodes that will be directly connected to the brain, according to reports. These electrodes’ electric currents have the ability to stimulate the brain.
Because our first production model will resemble an iPhone 1 in many ways, Musk emphasised the importance of upgradeability. “I’m very confident you wouldn’t want an iPhone 1 stuck in your mind if the iPhone 14 is available,” Musk stated. Neuralink, a firm based in the San Francisco Bay Area and Austin, Texas, has just begun testing its products on animals while awaiting approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for human clinical trials.
More than a year ago, Neuralink demonstrated a monkey with a brain chip playing a computer game using only its thoughts. Musk, who also controls Tesla, SpaceX, and the social media site Twitter, is well-known for his lofty intentions to colonise Mars and save humanity. He has the same lofty aspirations for Neuralink, which he launched in 2016.
He plans to develop a chip that will allow the brain to control complex electronic equipment, eventually restoring motor function to paralysed people and curing brain illnesses such as Parkinson’s, dementia, and Alzheimer’s. He also examines the integration of artificial intelligence and the brain.
