Why Delhi airport looks like a fish market; here’s all you need to know
Union Civil Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia and other officials recently inspected Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI). They were forced to do so amid complaints on social media about long security check queues, delayed boarding, and lack of smooth management when traveling through Terminal 3 of the airport.
Scindia told a TV news channel, ‘We have collectively decided some action points to solve this problem. Peak season has started and we are hopeful that it will be resolved in next 10 days. The question arises that what is happening at Delhi airport, and what is being done to fix it.
MHA to chair a high-level meeting today
According to reports, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) will chair a high-level meeting on Thursday (December 15) amid complaints of overcrowding at Terminal 3 of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. The meeting is likely to discuss immigration and infrastructure, the report said, adding that it would be convened by the home secretary.
The meeting will take place at North Block. Civil Aviation Secretary, senior officers of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), Director General of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Intelligence Bureau (IB) Chief, Chairman of the Airport Authority of India (AAI), senior officers of Immigration Department, officers of Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) and other officers of MHA will be present at this meeting.
Why did this chaos spread at Terminal 3 of IGI?
According to airport officials, the main reason for this is fewer counters, more passengers in less space, and limited security staff. The sudden increase in passengers towards the end of the year is also partly responsible for this overcrowding. Tourism activities had almost come to a standstill for two consecutive years due to the Corona epidemic. Now with the resumption, people have left for their favorite destination for a holiday.
Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia also believes that the number of passengers remained almost zero during the Corona period. Now the people who have come out of their homes have crossed the figure even before the Corona period. Significantly, during the third wave of Corona at the beginning of this year, there was a decrease in the number of people hospitalized due to infection.
Due to this, tourism in India is gaining momentum again. For example, in November this year, the number of tourists in Himachal Pradesh was three times more than in the previous year. Now some airline companies are asking passengers to reach the airport at least three and a half hours before the scheduled time of their flight.
