Chris Hipkins to be New Zealand’s next prime minister: It’s a bit tricky or victory find here
Education Minister Chris Hipkins is set to become New Zealand’s next prime minister after being the only candidate to enter the contest on Saturday (January 21) to replace Jacinda Ardern. Hipkins is expected to be confirmed as the new leader at a meeting of the Labor Party’s caucus comprising 64 MPs on Sunday (January 22).
“The Labor Party caucus will meet on Sunday at 1 pm [00:00 GMT] to endorse the nomination and confirm Chris Hipkins as party leader,” senior party member Duncan Webb said in a statement on Saturday (January 21).

- Spouse: Jade Marie Hipkins (m. 2020)
- Education: Victoria University of Wellington
- Previous offices: Minister for COVID-19 Response of New Zealand (2020–2022), MORE
- Office: Minister of Education of New Zealand since 2017

- Party: New Zealand Labour Party
“I think we’re an incredibly strong team,” Hipkins said. Hipkins will remain Prime Minister until his party’s term expires and will face a general election on October 14.
“We’ve gone through this process with unity and we’ll continue to do that. I’m feeling really fortunate to be working with such an amazing group of people who have a real commitment to the service of the people of New Zealand,” he added.
Hipkins, 44, who was first elected to parliament for the Labor Party in 2008, rose to fame in November 2020 after being named minister for COVID-19 and fronting the government’s response to the pandemic.
Hipkins, who is currently minister for police, education, and public service, as well as the leader of the House of Representatives, will lead her party’s uphill battle in the October 14 general election. Labour’s opponents have criticized the party over rising costs, poverty, and crime rates, and the party is lagging in the polls.
