Chetan Sharma Steps Down as BCCI Chief Selector Amidst Controversial Sting Operation
Chetan Sharma, the chairman of the senior selection committee, has resigned after being in the spotlight following a sting operation. The Board of Control for Cricket in India requested his resignation for breaching his contract by revealing team information.
The resignation was sent by Sharma on Friday (February 17) morning while he was in Kolkata for the Ranji Trophy final, and the BCCI accepted it immediately. This occurred several days after the sting operation.

This resignation comes after Chetan Sharma disclosed ‘behind-the-scenes’ talks within the cricket board over the team selection, as well as his major allegations about a supposed conflict between former skipper Virat Kohli and former president Sourav Ganguly. These statements were made during a sting operation that was broadcast on Tuesday (February 14) by Zee News channel.
In addition, the former chairman alleged that players on the Indian men’s cricket team use injections to falsely accelerate their recovery and return to international cricket, and sometimes call upon their own doctors to administer injections.
During a Zee News Channel sting operation, Sharma made an exclusive claim that Kohli had lied to the media in 2021 when he stated that Ganguly had not attempted to prevent his resignation as T20 captain following India’s failure to reach the semifinals in the T20 World Cup 2021. At that time, Kohli had informed the media that he had been informed by the selectors that he would no longer serve as ODI captain as well.
“Virat Kohli felt he lost the captaincy because of BCCI President. There were 9 people in the selection committee video conference, Ganguly may have told him ‘think about it once’. I think Kohli didn’t hear it, there were 9 others there including myself and all other selectors, BCCI officials – Kohli might not have heard him,” the former chairman of selectors said in the video.
Currently, there is no chief selector in the national selection panel. They will have to meet before the end of the ongoing second Test between India and Australia in Delhi. The current team has been selected for the first two Tests only. The team for the third and fourth Test will be announced. The third Test between India and Australia will be held in Indore from March 1.
