Assam flood updates: Google launches SOS Alert, hospitals submerge, water crises & more
The overall flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Monday (June 27) with the flood water receding in all the affected districts of the state. According to reports, the death toll increased to 134 in the state with the deluge claiming another eight lives, including two children, in the past 24 hours. The districts of Kamrup Metropolitan, Morigaon, and Nagaon each reported one death while Cachar alone reported five deaths. On the other side, the floods continue to have an impact on more than 21.52 lakh people in 2,254 villages across 22 districts.

Residents forced to drink flood water
In Cachar, more than 3 lakh people have been devastated by this flood. Silchar was completely covered in water. The main problem they have is a lack of drinking water since their homes are being washed away, there is no electricity, and they have no food. They currently use flood water as drinking water as they have no alternative solution. However, according to the NDRF authorities, they are working day and night to assist the people.
Google Launches SOS Alert
Google on Tuesday (June 28) announced that it has launched an SOS alert feature for Assam floods so that users close to the affected areas can directly access emergency phone numbers, websites, and maps using Google search. In addition to Google Search, Google Maps is highlighting affected areas to help rescue teams and those preparing to aid residents affected by the flood situation. Separately, Google.org, the company’s charitable arm, announced the grant of $500,000 (roughly INR 3.93 crore) to the Center for Disaster Philanthropy.
Donation for Assam
- Industrialist Mukesh Ambani and his son Anant have donated INR 25 crore to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) to help those affected by the devastating floods in Assam.
- Earlier, Bollywood actor Arjun Kapoor and director Rohit Shetty had contributed INR 5 lakh each to the CM Relief Fund.
- Singer Sonu Nigam has also donated INR 5 lakhs to the Assam Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).
