Assam government shuts down 34 schools due to poor results
The Assam government has decided to shut down a total of 34 schools as not a single one out of around 1,000 students of these government schools could clear the class X state board exam held in March 2022. Seven of these schools are from Karbi Anglong district, 5 each from Jorhat and Cachar, 2 each from Goalpara, Dhubri, Nagaon, Lakhimpur, and 1 each from Golaghat, Kokrajhar, Kamrup, Nalbari, Hailakandi, West Karbi Anglong Chirang, Darrang, and Dibrugarh districts.
Ranoj Pegu Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly said it’s meaningless to spend taxpayers’ money on schools with a zero-success record. “The primary duty of schools is to provide education. If a school cannot ensure that its students pass the Class X examination, there is no point in continuing these schools. The government cannot spend public money on schools having zero success records,”Ranoj Pegu said.
More than 1000 students from these schools appeared for the HSLC exam conducted by the Board of Secondary Education Assam (SEBA) this year. According to an official of the state secondary education department, the closed schools will be merged with other nearby government schools and teachers and students will be accommodated in them.
According to reports, the decision to close 34 government schools was made as a result of the 0% pass rate. However, they would be allowed to enroll in other schools so that the students are not negatively affected. The COVID-19 Pandemic has been mostly blamed by officials for the zero-success record. After nearly two years of online classes, the switch to physical tests resulted in a significant reduction in student performance.
The state secondary education department had given 102 schools a show cause notice in June of this year for poor results in Class X exams. The list also included those with pass rates under 10% in addition to those with zero success. In the same month, the state government announced plans to close many government schools, each with less than 30 students.
This year, the pass percentage had dropped to 56.49% from 93.10% in 2021 when exams were not conducted due to COVID, and results were declared based on the performance of students in previous exams and internal assessments.
