Biggest supermoon of 2022 to be visible on July 13: India time & other key facts
Earth is all set to witness a ‘supermoon’ today (July 13), which will bring the lunar body at its closest distance this year. This phenomenon occurs on the night of a full moon when the Moon is closest to Earth, causing light in the night sky. Today the Moon will be only 3,57,264 km away from Earth. The last supermoon occurred on June 14 also known as ‘Strawberry Moon’, which marked the last full Moon of spring or the first full moon of summer.
This month’s full moon will rise today, giving those who missed seeing the “strawberry supermoon” last month another chance. Interestingly, because of aphelion, it occurs to happen this time around when the Sun is closest to the planet. The 2022 supermoon – also known as the ‘Buck Moon’ – is named after the deer that usually form around this time of year on the deer’s forehead. The supermoon will be visible on July 13 at 2:38 pm EDT (12:08 am IST, Thursday). From early Tuesday morning to early Friday morning, the Moon will most certainly seem full.

What is Supermoon?
The term ‘supermoon’ was coined in 1979 by an astrologer named Richard Knoll. According to the definition adopted by the US space agency NASA, the event is a full moon that occurs within 90 percent of its closest approach to Earth. A supermoon is a treat for photographers and skywatchers as the moon appears brighter and larger as well, providing them with a spectacular chance to observe celestial events. This phenomenon has a tidal effect on the planet, causing very high and low tides. Astronomers say that coastal storms in the sea around this time can cause severe flooding.
