Bihar Bandh over Agnipath scheme: Internet services suspended, Police on high alert, latest updates here

Amid protests against the Centre’s newly launched ‘Agnipath’ recruitment scheme for the armed forces, student organizations led by the All India Students’ Association have called a 24-hour Bihar bandh today (June 18). According to reports, internet services have been suspended in 12 of the 38 districts of the state, which have been identified as the worst-affected districts.
The Bandh has received support from the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Congress, and the Left parties. On Friday, the violent protests over the matter continued for the third day in a row. Agitators set fire to the compartments of at least 14 trains, vandalised railway stations, and damaged railway property. In view of the bandh, special contingents of armed forces are being deployed in North Bihar and Magadha range. The police have also warned of action against those spreading rumors of bandh and violence.

Bihar bandh today over Agnipath
- Many political parties, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal(RJD), have supported the bandh in Bihar.
- Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ally Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustan AwamMorcha-Secular (HAM-S) has also decided to support the bandh in the “interest of the nation and youth”.
- Protesters have vandalised public property and set fire to train coaches in Bihar, which has become the centre point of the protests against the Agnipath scheme. The Indian Railways has cancelled almost 700 trains as a result of the protests so far.
- The Bihar government has suspended internet services in 12 districts until June 19, including Kaimer, Bhojpur, Aurangabad, Rohtas, Buxer, Nawada, and West Champaran, Samastipur, Lakhisarai, Begusarai, Vaishali, and Saran, as the situation continues to deteriorate.
- As a precaution, internet and SMS services were suspended in various districts of Haryana, including Ballabhgarh in Faridabad, following protests in Hisar, Fatehabad, and Jhajjar.
- AISA members demonstrated in the national capital Delhi, forcing Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to close entry and exit gates at various metro stations.
- Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Uttar Pradesh have all reported similar protests. After the protests in Telangana’s Secunderabad got violent, a 24-year-old Army aspirant from Dabeerpet village, Rakesh, died.
- In the midst of this, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and three service chiefs urged youths to calm down and stop protesting, saying the Agnipath initiative will be “transformational.”
