Punjab and Haryana govt change Chandigarh International Airport’s name
The governments of Punjab and Haryana decided on Saturday to honour freedom fighter, Bhagat Singh, by renaming the airport. Bhagwant Mann, the chief minister of Punjab, and Dushyant Chautala, the deputy chief minister of Haryana, met to discuss the matter before making a decision. CM Mann announced in a tweet that Punjab and Haryana had decided to honour Shaheed Bhagat Singhji by renaming Chandigarh International Airport. On this matter, I had a meeting today with Dushyant Chautala, the deputy chief minister of Haryana.
The airport should be known as “Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport, Mohali,” the Punjab government demanded in 2017. Although the Haryana government had expressed concerns about the use of “Mohali” in the airport’s name, it had no objections to the use of Bhagat Singh’s name.
Since Haryana contributed equally to its construction, according to the deputy chief minister of Haryana, Panchkula should also be added to the name of the structure. According to Chautala, the Haryana government has sent a recommendation to the Punjab government. He added that the central government would receive the same request in this regard. According to Chautala, Chandigarh Airport will one day be a significant airport in North India.
The Punjab and Haryana governments, along with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), collaborated on the Rs 485 crore airport project. Dushyant also stated that in the future, the Chandigarh airport will be a major airport in north India, and it will progress while meeting the needs of the people, so all differences in its naming should be resolved soon.
Both states have been exchanging barbs over naming the airport after the martyr, and because the airport is technically in Mohali, there have been reports that Haryana, which is a partner state in the airport, is unhappy with Punjab’s demand to name the new airport Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh International Airport, Mohali.
A resolution to rename the airport as “Shaheed-E-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh International Airport, Mohali” was previously approved by the Punjab Vidhan Sabha. In a similar fashion, the Haryana Vidhan Sabha approved a resolution to rename the terminal using Chandigarh. On March 23, the anniversary of the legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh’s martyrdom, the Punjab government has already proclaimed a state holiday. In accordance with the Chief Minister’s directives, the government has put up pictures of BR Ambedkar and Bhagat Singh in every office.
