China COVID-19 protests updates: Protesters clashed with police, demand Xi Jinping resign, supply chain affected
Due to the COVID-19 lockdown in China, the patience of citizens facing restrictions has broken. People’s anger is increasing in many big cities of the country including the capital Beijing and Shanghai. The angry public is demanding the resignation of President Xi Jinping.
Public venting of anger at Communist Party leaders is very unusual in China, where any direct criticism of the government can result in severe punishment.

The phase of sloganeering and demonstrations continues on the streets against the Covid policies of the Chinese government. It is reported that the police have also allowed rallies to take place in many places, but in Shanghai, many people have been arrested and the streets have been cordoned off. Hundreds of people gathered on the banks of a river in the capital Beijing for several hours on Sunday (November 27), singing the national anthem and listening to speeches.
A massive fire on Thursday(24 November 2022) in Urumqi, the capital of northwest China’s Xinjiang region, has become a new catalyst for public anger, with many blaming the COVID lockdown for hindering rescue efforts. Officials deny the claims. Citizens believe that these deaths happened due to the strict lockdown, as they did not get the benefit of emergency services at the required time.
Following the deadly fire, hundreds gathered outside government offices in Urumqi, chanting: “Remove the lockdown!”
Protests flare up in Shanghai
In Shanghai too, thousands of people protested against the strict Covidpolicies. The protesters also asked President Xi Jinping to step down. A protester in Shanghai told the BBC he felt “shocked and a little bit excited” to see people in the streets, adding that it was the first time he had seen such large-scale unrest in China. He said the lockdown left him feeling “sad, angry, and hopeless” and left him unable to see his ailing mother, who was being treated for cancer.
The BBC said on Sunday that one of its journalists in China was arrested, handcuffed, and beaten by police while covering protests in Shanghai.
Apart from protests, COVID-19 in Chinaprompted authorities to lock down vast swaths of the country, sparking fresh fears that global supply chains face further disruption from halted manufacturing and hobbled container ports.
