China has announced plans to provide visas to Indian professionals and their families who have been stranded in India for more than two years following strict visa restrictions imposed by Beijing due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thousands of Indian students studying at Chinese universities have shown an interest in returning to their colleges and universities, and China is currently processing their requests. After more than two years, the Chinese Embassy in India modified its COVID-19 visa policy on Monday (June 13), allowing foreign nationals and their accompanying family members to return to China for resumption of work.
For hundreds of Indian professionals and their families who have been stuck at home since 2020, this is a big relief. Several Indian professionals in China urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar last month to encourage Beijing to allow their stranded families to return. Apart from Indians, the Chinese embassy in New Delhi said family members of Chinese nationals and foreigners with Chinese permanent residence permits visiting China for family reunions or visiting relatives can apply for visas.
Apart from Indians, some of whom have Chinese husbands, several Chinese employees working for various companies were also stranded in India due to Beijing’s blanket visa restrictions and flight cancellations. Visas for tourism and private purposes, however, are still suspended, according to the Chinese Embassy.
According to previous estimates, approximately 23,000 Indian students, mostly studying medicine in Chinese colleges, are stuck in India after returning home in December 2019 when the coronavirus broke out in China. They were unable to return to China due to Chinese government restrictions implemented to prevent the spread of the disease. According to reports, over 12,000 Indian students have expressed a desire to return, and their details have been forwarded to the Chinese government for processing.
However, China’s visa announcement has sparked hope that flying services between the two countries may be restored soon. China has recently allowed students from friendly nations such as Pakistan, Thailand, the Solomon Islands, and, most recently, Sri Lanka to return.
