Cyclone Asani effect: Flights & trains cancelled due to unpleasant weather

Several flights and trains have been canceled due to cyclonic storm Asani, which has engulfed parts of southern India. All IndiGo flights, including 22 arrivals and 22 departures, and one Air Asia flight from Delhi and Bengaluru each have been cancelled. “Revised status of today’s flight ops in light of Cyclone Asani- All IndiGo flights (22 arrivals plus 22 departs) stand cancelled,” Vishakhapatnam Airport Director K Srinivasa Rao informed news agency ANI. He said as SpiceJet’s Kolkata-Visakhapatnam-Kolkata flight is cancelled, the budget carrier will take a decision on its flight to Hyderabad by 2 pm. According to Rao, Air India is yet to inform about its flight operations.
Asani has impacted not just flight operations but also train operations around Vishakhapatnam. Six trains have been cancelled, with one being rescheduled. 07784 Gunture-Repalle, 07785 Repalle-Guntur, 07786 Guntur Repalle, 07873 Repalle-Tenali, 17267 Kakinada Port-Vishakhapatnam, and 17268 Vishakhapatnam-Kakinada Port are among the trains that have been cancelled. The 17228 Guntur-Dhone train has been rescheduled to depart Guntur at 3 p.m. on May 11 instead of 1 p.m.

Cyclone Asani, which formed in the Bay of Bengal, is expected to reach the Andhra Pradesh coast on Wednesday (May 11). It is unlikely to make landfall, although it might recurve north-northeastwards and proceed along the shores of Narsapur, Yanam, Kakinada, Tuni, and Visakhapatnam and emerge into the westcentral Bay of Bengal by tonight. The ‘Severe Cyclonic Storm’ is very likely to weaken gradually into a ‘cyclonic storm’ today and then into a depression by Thursday morning.
Andhra Pradesh is expected to experience light to moderate rainfall in most places, heavy to very heavy rainfall in a few places, and isolated extremely heavy falls in places along the coast. A’red alert’ has been issued for coastal Andhra districts such as Guntur and Krishna. The districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Godavari have been placed on a ‘yellow’ alert. Meanwhile, isolated areas in Odisha and West Bengal are expected to experience heavy rain.
