Facebook to Make Two-Factor Authentication (2FA) Mandatory for Some Users
By Sanjay Maurya
Users of the social networking site Facebook will soon be obliged to utilise two-factor authentication to protect their accounts. For accounts that are at a high risk of being hacked, the social media business is considering making two-factor authentication obligatory. Human rights advocates, journalists, and government officials are among those considered to be in high danger. Adding a second factor of authentication to an account gives an extra degree of protection.
Enable two-factor authentication on Facebook
The new mechanism will be rolled out as part of Facebook’s increased security initiative, Facebook Protect. The initiative was created to safeguard the accounts of those who are at a greater risk of their credentials being stolen by cyber thieves. Facebook is also working to roll out the function to all users soon.
We want to make 2FA as simple as possible because it is such an important part of any user’s online security. We need to go beyond promoting awareness and encourage enrollment to assist promote 2FA enrolment. This is a group of persons that sit at pivotal places in public discourse and are frequently targeted, thus they should probably enable 2FA for their safety. TechCrunch spoke with Nathaniel Gleicher, Facebook’s Head of Security Policy, about the functionality.
According to Facebook, roughly 950,000 of the 1.5 billion accounts in the Facebook Protect programme have enabled two-factor authentication. Facebook Protect has first introduced in 2018 as an experimental programme in the United States ahead of the 2020 elections. This was implemented to prevent election meddling and platform abuse.
2FA is an important feature on the Meta-owned social networking site, which aims to make it mandatory for high-risk users. However, whether or not it makes the feature necessary for all users remains to be seen. By the end of the year, the initiative will have spread to 50 nations, including India, Portugal, and others. By 2022, more countries will be added to the list.
Although fewer than 4% of Facebook’s worldwide monthly active user base has not registered in 2FA, the company maintains it has “no intentions” to make the feature mandatory for all accounts.
