Aruna Miller creates history after becoming first Indian-American to win Maryland LG race
Aruna Miller won the contest for lieutenant governor, writing history as the first Indian-American politician to do so in the state of Maryland, which is close to the US capital Miller, a 58-year-old former delegate to the Maryland House, ran for lieutenant governor along with current Democratic governor Wes Moore.
The Lieutenant Governor fills in as the state’s second-highest elected official when the Governor is absent or unable to serve. The Lieutenant Governor also starts working as Governor in the event of the Governor’s death, resignation, or removal from office. Moore and Miller were declared the winners over their Republican challengers on Tuesday night, shortly after the polls had closed.
During their campaigns, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris both endorsed Moore and Miller. Miller overcame last-minute fierce resistance from her detractors who accused her of recruiting Hindu nationalists, a charge she rejected, to win the campaign for lieutenant governor in Maryland. Her appeal among Indian-Americans is widespread and partisan in Maryland. Leaders in the Republican and Trump camps spoke out in support of her and raised money. Jasdip Singh Jassee is a well-known member of this group.
While addressing the state Miller said that Maryland, you tonight had shown the nation the influence a small but mighty state can have when democracy is on the ballot. You chose peace over strife, expanding rights rather than restricting them, and hope over fear. She further said in her victory speech that you elected me as your future Lieutenant Governor and Wes Moore as your Governor.
She said, “Ever since I came to this country in 1972, I have never stopped being excited for the promise of America. I will never stop fighting to make sure that promise is available to everyone. And this promise begins with a commitment to deliver a Maryland where we leave no one behind,”
