Google Translate adds Bhojpuri, Assamese, Maithili & 5 more Indian languages

On Wednesday (May 11) Google announced that Assamese has finally been added to Google Translate along with seven other Indian languages, including Mizo and Meiteilon from Manipur. Google officials said that in the latest update where they added 24 new languages to Google Translate, Sanskrit was the most requested language.
Google officials also said that the first languages of Northeast India are being added. In 24 new languages, eight newly added languages are Sanskrit, Assamese, Bhojpuri, Dogri, Konkani, Maithili, Mizo, and Meiteilon (Manipuri).

The eight new Indian languages to be added soon include:
- Assamese, is used by about 25 million people in Northeast India
- Bhojpuri, used by about 50 million people in northern India, Nepal, and Fiji
- Dogri, used by about 3 million people in northern India
- Konkani, used by about 2 million people in Central India
- Maithili, used by about 34 million people in northern India
- Meiteilon (Manipuri), used by about 2 million people in Northeast India
- Mizo, used by about 830,000 people in Northeast India
- Sanskrit is used by about 20,000 people in India
This brings the overall number of Indian languages supported by the service to 19. The statement was made late Wednesday night at the annual Google conference I/O. All of the languages added in the update will only be supported in the text translation feature, but the company plans to add voice to text, camera mode, and other capabilities soon. “We’re working on them,” Caswell (senior software engineer, Google Research) said, “but they’re not yet supported for all of these languages.”

We don’t know when the languages will be available in Google Translate but expect them to gradually roll out to the service at a later date.
