By Sanjay Maurya
After successful bidding during the 139th IOC session, India will host the 2023 International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in Mumbai. The Indian representative on the committee, Nita Ambani, called it “a huge development for India’s Olympic goals.” For the first time since 1983, India will host the session. The event will take place at the state-of-the-art, brand new Jio World Convention Centre. Mumbai received a historic 99% vote in favor of its bid from delegates participating in the process, with 75 members supporting its candidacy at the session held in Beijing.
As India is set to host the IOC session for the first time in 40 years, Nita Ambani spoke about what an honor it was for the country. “After 40 years, the Olympic Movement returns to India with the honour of hosting the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Mumbai in 2023! I’m looking forward to the Indian young experiencing the thrill of the Olympics. Our ambition is to host the Olympic Games in India in the coming years “In a statement, IOC member Nita stated.
She went on to say, “It is a true honour to lead the Indian delegation today and to express our excitement and enthusiasm for hosting such an important Olympic event. This would be the first time India has hosted an International Olympic Committee (IOC) session in 40 years. India’s next generation is full of a billion hopes.”
The yearly gathering of the members of the IOC, which consists of 101 voting members and 45 honorary members, is known as an IOC session. It debates and makes decisions on essential aspects of the worldwide Olympic movement, such as the approval or change of the Olympic Charter, the election of International Olympic Committee (IOC) members and office bearers, and the selection of the Olympic host city. Apart from Ambani, the Indian group included Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Narinder Batra, Sports Minister Anurag Thakur, and Abhinav Bindra, India’s first individual Olympic gold medalist.
“Nearly half of India’s population, over 600 million people, are under 25 years old,” Nita stated in her virtual session speech to the IOC delegates. As a result, India is one of the most important and interesting locations for the Olympic Movement to flourish.
