Kerala government to launch its own OTT platform for Malayalam films
By Sanjay Maurya
The Kerala government is all set to launch its own over-the-top (OTT) streaming platform to supplement the income of independent low-budget filmmakers and stream movies that don’t get released. The state government has planned to launch it by November 1.
According to the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce, the apex body of the Malayalam film industry, 209 films were censored in 2021, a year marked by total lockdowns and restrictions on film shooting. According to reports, only 61 movies managed a theatrical release in 2021 – most of them made it to OTT – while over 90 films have not found an interested OTT platform.
Following the technical presentation, the Kerala State Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) has picked four bids for the platform from a total of eight. The state government has set out INR 5 crore for the platform, which will be vendor-hosted platform in starting stage. KSFDC, which was founded in 1975 to aid the creation and marketing of Malayalam films, now has 17 screens across Kerala and is in the process of acquiring seven more. In addition, award-winning films that have not yet been shown in theatres will be shown on the platform. KSFDC has no intentions to buy the films for the platform, according to Maya, but will share the earnings with the filmmakers.
Here’s Why Kerala Government plan to launch an OTT platform
- Malayalam film has piqued the interest of OTT players such as Netflix and Amazon. However, they are mainly restricted to films from which they may profit.
- Only about 15 Malayalam films with significant stars have been released on major platforms in recent years.
- Furthermore, smaller and homegrown OTT services like Neestream and Mainstream TV lack the financial resources to compete with larger competitors.
- As a result, the state government suggested an OTT platform, which will provide space and a revenue share for low-budget and independent films that are having difficulty finding an audience.
The Malayalam cinema industry has been at the forefront of new initiatives, such as the simultaneous distribution of low-budget films across numerous OTT platforms in order to reach a bigger audience and reduce piracy. In the Malayalam OTT industry, there are eight to eleven small players, some of which are based in West Asia.
