On Friday, Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) a subsidiary of Coal India Limited informed that it has posted a record production of 148.01 million tonnes of coal and it reached the highest-ever dispatch of 146 million tonnes of coal in between 2020-21 fiscal year, we break all previous records and set a new target in coalfields, company said.
Chairman-cum-Managing Director PK Sinha said, “production of coal, despatch and OB removal of Mahanadi Coalfields Limited. In between the 2020-21 fiscal year, MCL was the highest ever at 148.01 MT, 146 MT & 174.5 MCuM respectively,” he added, expressing his gratitude to all the stakeholders, including the Centre & the State government and employees of the company and contractors’ workers.
Sinha said MCL spent about INR 2,300 crore as capital expenditure, which was the highest among all Coal India subsidiaries in the current fiscal year.
“Mahanadi Coalfields Limited (MCL) focused on supplying a coal pollution mitigation which is also known as clean coal with the minimum impact on our environment. MCL is implementing 9 projects to give a pollution-less rake loading system with a total expenditure of Rs 3,600 crore,” Sinha said.
The company established a dedicated COVID Health Centre in Jharsugud. The miner had spent INR 193 crore for its company social responsibility program in the last fiscal year, Sinha said.
Sinha said Mahanadi Coalfields Limited signed an MoU with the Odisha government and SUM Hospital for setting up medical facilities in Bhubaneswar and Talcher (commercial and industrial centre of Odisha) for the COVID-19 treatment.
History of Indian Coalfields
In India, there are 69 major coalfields, 17 located in the north-eastern region. India is the 3rd largest coal-producing country in the world in terms of annual coal production. At the time of the country’s freedom in 1947, the coal production was reached 30 million tonnes yearly, today India is one of the best counties for coal production. The complete coal industry in India was nationalized in 1972 and 1973 and then massive investments were made by the Government of India in this basic infrastructure sector. Mahanadi Coalfields Limited’s (MCL) record production of 148.01 million tonnes shows a great future for the Indian Coal industry.
