No more fines for not wearing masks in Delhi as the Covid situation eases
By Sanjay Maurya
The Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) announced on Thursday (31st March) that there will be no fine if people do not wear face masks in public places in the national capital.
However, the civic body still appealed to wear masks and follow appropriate COVID behavior as the pandemic has not ended completely. There is currently a fine of INR 500 for not wearing a mask in public places in Delhi.
Not just in Delhi, but also in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced on Thursday that from April 1, 2022, no fines will be enforced for not wearing face masks in public places.
Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal presided over a meeting of DDMA which took the decision. This comes after a significant drop in the number of new COVID-19 cases in the city during the past several days. The authorities, on the other hand, have already lifted the majority of the Covid-related restrictions. In light of the declining number of new cases of the virus in the country, the Centre had already encouraged states and union territories to consider discontinuing containment measures.
The Delhi government placed many restrictions in December last year after a spike in coronavirus cases attributable to the Omicron variant. When the situation normalised, the restrictions were gradually lifted, and the restrictions were completely removed on February 28. However, the rule related to the wearing of masks in public places, such as in buses and metro trains, continued.
Residents’ welfare organisations have called the move “risky and shocking,” saying that with the new relaxations, 99 percent of the city’s population will stop taking precautions.
Ashok Bhasin, president of the North Delhi Resident Welfare Federation, said he supports the exemption but complete removal of the rule is not sensible.
Meanwhile, according to statistics given by the health department, Delhi reported 123 Covid-19 cases on 30th March, with a positive rate of 0.50 percent and one death from the virus. The total number of cases in the national capital now stands at 18,64,857. The death toll has risen to 26,151, according to the report. According to the department’s latest bulletin, as many as 24,706 Covid-19 tests were conducted here the previous day.
