Ranveer Singh’s ’83’ crosses INR 100 crore mark at domestic box office

Due to the lack of new releases, the sports drama ’83 has finally surpassed the INR 100 crore mark at the box office. According to the trade website Box Office India, the Kabir Khan-directed film is making half the business of Allu Arjun’s dubbed action film Pushpa, which is playing in fewer theatres across the Hindi belt. ’83’s producers are expected to lose roughly 80 crore due to its enormous 200 crore budget.
On its official Twitter account, Reliance Entertainment, one of the production companies behind “83,” announced the news. Khan defended the film’s box office performance in an earlier interview, calling “83” a “victim of the pandemic” and said the film put up a show despite battling COVID-19 restrictions such as the shutdown of cinema halls in certain states and a theatre occupancy cap in critical territories. The film chronicles India’s victory in the 1983 World Cup final when the team upset the mighty West Indies to capture their first-ever World Cup trophy.
Rising Covid cases hit box office collections
After some states ordered theatres to close and others limited capacity, the release of big-budget films was pushed back. These forces are placing pressure on the box office once again.
Indian films are expected to make Rs 1,500-2,000 crore in the first three months of 2022, according to film producer and trade industry analyst Girish Johar. However, fears of a third wave of coronavirus infections have reduced expectations for large collections.
He predicted that January will be a washout due to the postponement of several films, including RRR, starring Ram Charan and Alia Bhatt, and Prithviraj, featuring Akshay Kumar, which was set to debut on January 21.
This month, approximately 20 films in Hindi, English and other languages will be released on the big screen. So far, two releases have been confirmed: south superstar Ajith’s Valimai and Attack starring John Abraham.
In addition to a lack of content, theatres are experiencing operational challenges as a result of restrictions and shutdowns. Theatres have been ordered to close in Delhi, Bihar, and parts of Haryana. Cinema halls in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Punjab have been limited to 50% capacity.
