Single-use plastic ban in India from July 1; here’s all you need to know
The Center has banned the use of ‘single-use plastic’ from July 1. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change announced the ban in a gazette notification last year and has now announced a list of products that will be banned from July 1.“The manufacture, stocking, distribution, import, sale, and use of following single-use plastic, including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene, commodities shall be prohibited with effect from the 1st July 2022,” says the Ministry notification.
What is single-use plastic?
As the name suggests, it refers to plastic items that are used once and discarded. Plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, soda, and water bottles, and the majority of food packaging are examples of these products. About 300 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually, and half of it is throwaway. Only 10–13% of plastic products are recycled globally.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) claims that plastic is bad for the environment because it is not biodegradable and takes a long time to disintegrate. On the other hand, Single-use plastics are worse because never fully break down, they degrade and become microplastic and continue to pollute the environment.
Banned products list
From July 1, 2022, plastic sticks will be out of the market. The banned product lists are as follows: –
- Ear bud using a plastic stick
- Balloon stick

The Central Pollution Control Board has instructed the petrochemical companies to stop providing raw materials to the companies that make these plastic products. Another instruction is to cancel the licences of companies that utilise or sell these products. India features in the top 100 nations of single-use plastic waste generation. The majority of single-use plastics cannot be recycled, we must use less plastic, transition to environmentally friendly products and services, and develop technology that more effectively recycles plastic.
