The Goa airport will be closed at night till September 2021
Flight operations at the Goa airport will be suspended at night until September 2021, according to a senior official, because the runway is being renovated.
Dabolim International Airport is a civil and military airport in Dabolim, a village in Goa, India, about 4 kilometers from Vasco da Gama. Panaji, the state capital, is 30 kilometers from the airport. It serves Goa and Vasco da Gama and covers an area of 702 hectares. In 2012, the airport served 3.54 million passengers and 27,690 flights.
The Dabolim International Airport is a part of the INS Hansa Base in Vasco, Goa. According to an Indian Navy spokesman, the modernization work began on May 8 and will run until September 8, 2021. From 2200 hours to 0630 hours, the runway will be closed to all flights, official added.
Mentioned that the modernization work is being carried out by Tata Power SED and that it will be done at night to reduce the effects on civil aircraft operations. The closure, according to Goa Airport Director Gagan Malik, would not affect civilian flight operations.
According to him, almost 90% of the flights to Goa have been canceled due to the pandemic situation. The closure will have a 10% to 12% effect on us, but we will be able to offset it, according to Malik.
Covid-19 impacts on Goa tourism
Goa is facing an unparalleled tourism crisis, with lockdown in neighboring states, night curfews, reduced flight duration, continuing ban on international passenger charter, closed hotels, and an unrelenting surge in Covid-19 active cases and deaths.
“Only 1,400 of Goa’s 3,500 licensed hotels are operational. Since international charter flights are prohibited, most 1-4-star hotels are also closed. High-end visitors feel better in branded hotels, but 5-star hotels are in high demand right now. “Boat market has dropped by 40%, and shacks that closed in May last year closed in March this year,” said Nilesh N. Shah, president of the TTAG (Goa Travel and Tourism Association).
Goa recorded 75 Covid-19 deaths on May 11th, the most in a single day so far, bringing the total death toll to 1805. The state recorded 3124 new infections and 2475 recoveries, with the case positivity rate falling to 37% from 46% on the 10th of May.
