According to reports, the rescue efforts have been hampered by the freezing temperatures and aftershocks that have taken place in the aftermath of the 7.8-magnitude quake.
The United Nations’ emergency relief official recently arrived at the Turkey-Syria border, where he expressed his concern over the fact that the people in the north-west part of Syria feel “abandoned.”
“We have let the people in northwest Syria down so far,” he tweeted. “They feel rightly abandoned. There is a call for international help that has not arrived. It is my duty and our obligation to rectify this failure as soon as possible. That is my focus now.”
The White Helmets, also known as the Syrian Civil Defense Group, have concluded their search and rescue operations as of Friday and anticipate that the death toll will increase, according to CNN. The group has now shifted their focus to search and recovery efforts.
The United Nations made its first visit to the region since the earthquake struck last Thursday. During the visit, Geir Pederson, the U.N. special envoy to Syria, announced that the organization will be providing aid to northern Syria via both Turkey and Damascus.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also declared its intention to send health supplies to 400,000 people in the affected area and has already sent 110 tons of medical supplies to the region.
India has taken swift action to assist Turkey following the earthquake by dispatching an Army medical team, National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) personnel, and medical supplies. This is just the latest example of India’s rapid response to natural disasters, both domestically and abroad. Over the past 15 years, India has been at the forefront of disaster relief efforts and has established itself as a key player in responding to emergencies, particularly in its neighboring countries.
