Xiaomi beats Apple: become world’s second-largest smartphone brand, ranking report 2021
Xiaomi is now the world’s second-largest smartphone manufacturer, surpassed Apple. According to Canalys research, the Chinese smartphone maker witnessed an 83 percent year-over-year (YoY) increase, the most among the top-five firms.
It’s the first time Xiaomi has reached the top two rankings in terms of smartphone shipments internationally. Those who are unaware, Samsung and Apple have long controlled the top two spots. Huawei had briefly overtaken Apple for second place, but the US quickly imposed penalties.
Huawei had briefly grabbed the 2nd position, overtook Apple but soon after that, it started facing sanctions by the US. After exiting the high-end luxury phone market, Xiaomi rushed to fill this gap by releasing the Xiaomi Smartphone Switch, which offered top-of-the-line specs and competitive prices.
Xiaomi’s shipments increased by almost 300 percent in Latin America, 50 percent in Western Europe, and 150 percent in Africa. Xiaomi’s goal, according to Canalys, should be to increase sales of its top-of-the-line phones like the Mi 11 Ultra, but the smartphone maker will continue to face competition from other Chinese firms with the same ambition, such as Oppo and Vivo.
According to Canalys Research, Samsung remained the world’s leading smartphone brand in the second quarter of this year, with a 19 percent market share, while Xiaomi increased its market share to 17 percent in Q2 2021. In terms of smartphone shipments, Apple ranks third with 14% of the market share. With a combined 10% market share, OPPO and Vivo are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively.
According to Canalys reports top 5 smartphone company
Vendor | Share | Growth |
Samsung | 19% | Increase 15% |
Xiaomi | 17% | Increase 83% |
Apple | 14% | Increase 1% |
Oppo | 10% | Increase 28% |
Vivo | 10% | Increase 27% |
Companies such as OnePlus, Xiaomi, and others firms have since rushed to fill the gap. It would be exciting to see if Xiaomi can maintain its lead over the next several quarters in the face of increasing competition.
