Yair Lapid Officially Becomes Israel Prime Minister
Yair Lapid became the 14th Prime Minister of Israel on Thursday (June 30) after the Knesset was dissolved and scheduled the next election on 1st November this year. Lapid’s term is probably going to be short one as he will remain the prime minister until a new government is formed after the November 1 election. At a handover ceremony, Lapid said, “We’ll do the best we can for a Jewish, democratic state, good and strong and thriving, because that is the job, and it’s bigger than all of us.” Apparently, outgoing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett was also present in the ceremony.
According to the coalition agreement, Naftali Bennett resigned as prime minister and took over as alternate prime minister, a position Lapid had held for the previous year. Lapid will continue to serve as foreign minister. After becoming the Prime Minister, Lapid’s first stop was the Hall of Remembrance at Yad Vashem. He claimed he went there “to pledge to my father that I will always maintain Israel strong and capable of defending itself and safeguarding its children.”
His father, Tommy Lapid, was former justice minister and a Holocaust survivor. On the very first day in office, Lapid held a meeting with Ronen Bar, the head of the Shin Bet security agency, at the Kirya military headquarters in Tel Aviv. Shortly afterward, the new Israeli Prime Minister held a meeting to discuss the two Israeli men and the corpses of two Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers seized by Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
This week, a video released by Hamas that featured Israeli prisoner Hisham al-Sayed wearing an oxygen mask—the first time anybody had seen him since he crossed into Gaza in 2015—brought the sensitive subject back into the public eye. Avera Mengistu and the bodies of the soldiers Oron Shaul and Hadar Goldin are also thought to be in the possession of Hamas. The talks to ensure their freedom have continually stalled repeatedly throughout the years.
The first weekly cabinet meeting under Lapid’s leadership is scheduled for this coming Sunday. Bennett will continue to serve as the government’s alternate prime minister despite his Wednesday announcement that he won’t run in the next election. The country’s Iran policy would continue to fall under his purview. Lapid made a formal announcement of his whole staff on Thursday as he prepared to get started.
For the first time in Israeli history, a woman will head up his prime ministerial office. Once Lapid assumes leadership of the Prime Minister’s Office, Naama Schultz, a seasoned assistant to the Yesh Atid leader, will take over as director-general of the Prime Minister’s Office. Schultz served as the head of Lapid’s office during Lapid’s tenure as alternate prime minister, also as an adviser when he was finance minister.
According to The Times of Israel, Lapid is scheduled to visit Paris on July 5 briefly where he will see French President Emmanuel Macron. As per expectations, Lapid will convene the first weekly cabinet meeting of his premiership and Bennett will also be a part of government as an alternate prime minister.
