YouTube Go app to shut down in August
By Sanjay Maurya
Launched in 2016, Google has announced plans to discontinue its slimmed version of the main YouTube app, YouTube Go. As of the most recent update, YouTube Go won’t be available in August. In an official blog post, YouTube said that the lightweight alternative to its main app is being phased out as it becomes obsolete over time. YouTube Go was designed for people who have limited Internet access and low-end devices that struggle to keep the main app running smoothly.

YouTube Go will be shut down permanently in August 2022, according to Google. YouTube Go was launched in 2016, aimed at users in locations that have low connectivity, data prices, and low-end devices. “Since then, YouTube has invested in changes to the main YouTube app that make it function better in these environments, as well as giving a better user experience that is inclusive of our entire community,” Google wrote in a blog post. Google also said that performance for entry-level devices and people who watch YouTube on slower networks has improved.
Focus on the main YouTube app
Users using YouTube Go should download the standard YouTube app or go to youtube.com in their browsers, according to Google. The standard YouTube app delivers a better overall user experience than YouTube Go, as well as features that aren’t available on YouTube Go. Users of YouTube Go, for example, are unable to comment, post, use dark mode, or produce content on the app. They can now use the normal YouTube app to access all of YouTube Go’s features.
Google also stated that it is developing more user controls to help viewers with limited data usage reduce their mobile data usage. Google has previously said that YouTube Go had received more than 500 million downloads, making it one of the platform’s most popular apps. In December of last year, Google redesigned the UI among other things for Android 12 Go.
