The province of Alberta has withdrawn its support for the potential bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, effectively ending the opportunity to bring this multi-sport event back to Canada.
Minister of Tourism and Sport, Joseph Schow, made a statement expressing that hosting the Games, which usually attract over 4,000 athletes from the 54 nations of the Commonwealth, does not align with the interests of Alberta taxpayers.
Schow pointed out that based on current bid estimates, hosting the event “could result in a cost of up to CAN$2.68 billion (US$2.01 billion). He further added that the corporate sponsorship model and limited broadcast revenues would place 93 percent of these costs and risks on taxpayers.
“Our commitment to transparency with Albertans about the costs of hosting international sporting events and demonstrating a return on investment for the people and communities in Alberta has led us to the decision of not pursuing the bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games,” said Schow.
According to the report, Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek’s office told Canada’s national public broadcaster CBC the bid was finished without support from the province.
This decision comes shortly after the Australian state of Victoria also withdrew from hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games due to escalating costs, leaving organizers deeply disappointed. Victoria state premier Daniel Andrews revealed that the initial estimate of Aus$2 billion (US$1.36 billion) to hold the games would likely be closer to Aus$7 billion.
Commonwealth Sport Canada, responsible for organizing Canadian teams in the Commonwealth Games, was expected to complete a feasibility study for a 2030 bid by Alberta later this month. They stated that they believed Victoria’s withdrawal from hosting 2026 played a significant role in the provincial government’s choice to cancel the bid.
Canada has previously hosted four Commonwealth Games in 1930, 1954, 1978, and 1994. The most recent edition was held in 2022 in Birmingham after the English city stepped in to replace Durban, South Africa, which lost hosting rights due to missed deadlines and financial issues.
Victoria was the sole bidder for the 2026 edition from southeastern Australia.
The Commonwealth Games, held every four years, constitute a multi-sport extravaganza. Throughout their history, they have endured just one cancellation, occurring solely during the period of World War Two.
