Popular e-commerce company Shopee shuts down India operations: Here’s why
By Sanjay Maurya
Singapore’s giant Sea limited announced its plan to shut down Shopee, its e-commerce platform, in India. Shopee joined the Indian market last year and rapidly became popular due to its vast choice of low-cost options. The Shopee website and app are no longer available for download on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
In India, the government recently blocked the famous Singapore-based app, Fire Fire. But Both Android and iOS users can continue to enjoy the Free Fire Max. Initially, it was said that the sudden shutdown of Shopee was linked to the Free Fire ban, but this is probably not the case.

Shopee shuts operations in India
Shopee’s India shutdown decision is not related to the Free Fire ban, according to a person close to the situation. Shopee announced the closure of its South Asian operations in an official statement, citing “global market uncertainties.”
Meanwhile, Shopee users who have the app installed on their phones have received a closure message. The e-commerce platform is no longer taking orders in the country.
“In view of global market uncertainties, we have decided to close our early-stage Shopee India initiative. During this period of transition, we will focus on supporting our local seller and buyer communities and our local team to make the process as smooth as possible,” a company spokesperson told TechCrunch.
“We will continue to focus our efforts on making a positive impact on our global communities, in line with our mission to improve the lives of disadvantaged people through technology,” the spokesperson added.
The move comes months after the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) approached India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, cautioning him that Shopee’s planning to offer a vast range of products at lucrative prices will hurt the country’s local retailers.
Meanwhile, hundreds of workers in India were left shocked by the sudden shutdown of company operations. According to TechCrunch, the local India team heard about the shutdown on Monday.
While Shopee India has declared that it would cease operations in India on March 29 at 12 a.m., Meesho said they have jobs available across all teams with flexible location options.
