Elon Musk: Twitter Legacy Blue Tick To Be Removed On THIS DATE
Written by Sanjay Kumar
Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, has announced that the legacy blue ticks on the platform will be removed after April 20. From that date, only Twitter Blue subscribers will receive the verified badge. Musk has been advocating for Twitter Blue, which costs a minimum of INR 650 (web), since he took over the company late last year.
Musk believes that users should have an easier way to get verified, which indicates that their account is authentic. Initially, the date for removing the legacy verified badges was set for April 1. However, few accounts lost their badges, and most verified users still have the blue tick on their profiles.
The recent announcement from Musk was made in a tweet, where he wrote, “Final date for removing legacy Blue checks is 4/20.”

The date of April 20, or 4/20, is commonly associated with marijuana smokers, who jokingly smoke pot at 4:20 pm every day. Musk has made several jokes about 4:20 in the past, particularly after his picture of smoking marijuana on the Joe Rogan podcast went viral. In April last year, he announced his plan to buy Twitter for $54.20 per share in cash. In 2018, he famously tweeted that Tesla might go private at $420 per share, which resulted in a lawsuit from shareholders for misleading investors. However, in February this year, a jury in San Francisco ruled that Musk did not deceive investors with his tweets on Tesla shares.
Twitter users with legacy blue ticks will have to pay for a Twitter Blue subscription to retain their verified status. The cost of Blue subscriptions varies by market. In India, the subscription costs INR 900 per month via iPhones and Android smartphones. On Twitter Web, the cost is lower at INR 650 per month. Annual subscriptions are also available at a relatively cheaper rate.
Apart from the verified badge, Twitter Blue subscribers can enjoy several features. They can post long-form tweets and have the option to undo/edit their tweets. They also get access to newer features.
To get verified, users must meet specific criteria. Twitter accounts cannot sign up for Twitter Blue for 30 days. Inactive accounts or accounts that have changed their profile photo, display name, or username in the last three days may also be unable to sign up. Subscribers will also need a verified phone number.
