Hyundai and Kia Announce Massive Recall of 3.37 million Vehicles in the US Over Engine Fire Risk

In a major automotive safety development, automakers Hyundai and Kia are recalling a staggering 3.37 million vehicles in the United States due to concerns of engine compartment fires. The announcement comes in response to an alarming safety issue that has prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to advise owners to park these vehicles outside their homes and structures until the necessary repairs are carried out.
Safety Concerns and Advisory from NHTSA
The NHTSA has issued a critical safety advisory, urging owners of the affected Hyundai and Kia vehicles to take immediate precautions. In an official statement, the agency cautioned, “Until these recalled vehicles have been repaired, the manufacturers say the safest place to park them is outside and away from homes and other structures. Fires can occur whether the vehicle is parked and turned off or while driving.”
The safety concern arises from a potential malfunction in the vehicle’s anti-lock brake system (ABS) module, which may lead to brake fluid leakage and subsequent electrical shorts. These shorts can result in significant overcurrent within the ABS module, elevating the risk of engine compartment fires, whether the vehicle is in motion or parked.
Details of the Recall
As part of this extensive recall, Kia is set to recall approximately 1.73 million vehicles produced between 2010 and 2017. The affected Kia models include Borrego, Cadenza, Forte, Sportage, K900, Optima, Soul, Rio, Sorento, and Rondo.
Hyundai, on the other hand, will recall roughly 1.64 million vehicles from the model years 2011 to 2015. The Hyundai models affected by the recall encompass Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, Accent, Azera, Veloster, Santa Fe, Equus, Veracruz, Tucson, Tucson Fuel Cell, and Santa Fe Sport vehicles.
Next Steps for Vehicle Owners
NHTSA has outlined the next steps for vehicle owners in its advisory. Hyundai plans to notify affected owners, urging them to visit their nearest dealership to have the ABS module fuse replaced. In contrast, Kia is still actively working on a remedy to address the issue. Vehicle owners can expect to receive notifications about the recall in November of this year.
This recall underscores the automakers’ commitment to addressing safety concerns promptly and ensuring the well-being of their customers. Vehicle owners are strongly encouraged to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and take immediate action to rectify this potentially hazardous situation.
