Written by Sanjay Kumar
In the midst of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war that continues to affect the lives of Israeli and Palestine residents, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has extended his heartfelt support to the company’s employees in Israel and expressed his deep concern over the escalating conflict. Google, with over 2,000 employees and two offices in the country, is actively ensuring the safety of its local workforce.
Pichai’s Message of Support
On 11 October, Sundar Pichai took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts on the conflict. He stated, “Deeply saddened by the terrorist attacks in Israel this weekend and the escalating conflict underway. Google has 2 offices and over 2,000 employees in Israel. It’s unimaginable what they’re experiencing. Our immediate focus since Saturday has been on employee safety.
We’ve now made contact with all of our local employees, and will continue supporting them. We’re also working to provide reliable, accurate information to people through our products, as well as sharing the cyber activity that our experts are seeing. We’ll be supporting humanitarian and relief organizations on the ground. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families.”
Internal Email to Employees
On the same day the conflict escalated, Pichai addressed Google’s employees in Israel through an internal email. In this communication, he expressed deep concern for the employees, emphasizing their safety as the top priority. Pichai mentioned that the company had initiated the process of contacting all employees in the region. The email conveyed the gravity of the situation and the steps being taken to ensure the well-being of every Googler in the area.
Google’s Response to the Crisis
In addition to prioritizing employee safety, Google is actively working to provide reliable and accurate information to people through its products. The company’s systems, including Google and YouTube, are designed to prioritize authoritative information during times of crisis and breaking news. Their teams are working tirelessly to detect and remove graphically violent, hateful, or terrorist content, as well as coordinated disinformation campaigns.
Cybersecurity Efforts
Google’s cybersecurity experts are actively sharing their findings in real-time with the broader security community. This includes monitoring and addressing cyber threats and disinformation campaigns. Google’s security unit, Mandiant, has observed fake accounts connected to Iran promoting anti-Israeli narratives and is investigating reports of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks by suspected pro-Hamas and pro-Russia hacktivist groups targeting Israeli government websites.
In conclusion, Google is unwavering in its commitment to the safety and well-being of its employees in Israel while actively contributing to information dissemination and cybersecurity efforts during this challenging period in the region. The company’s support extends to the victims and their families affected by the ongoing conflict.
