Amid an ongoing diplomatic dispute between Canada and India, Canada’s Immigration Minister Marc Miller has announced a slowdown in visa processing for Indians seeking to come to Canada.
The diplomatic tension between the two nations has escalated, with India requesting a reduction in the number of Canadian diplomats stationed in India, a request that Canada has complied with. Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly disclosed that 41 out of Canada’s 62 diplomats in India, along with their dependents, have been removed. Exceptions have been granted to 21 Canadian diplomats who will remain in India. Joly justified the decision, citing concerns about the safety and immunity of Canadian diplomats and their families.
Joly also emphasized that India’s decision will impact the level of services provided to citizens of both countries. As a result, Canada is temporarily suspending in-person services in Chandigarh, Mumbai, and Bangalore.
The roots of this dispute trace back to a September 18th statement by Canada’s Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, accusing India of involvement in the murder of a prominent Sikh activist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in Canada. Canada has alleged that India played a role in Nijjar’s killing in suburban Vancouver. In response, India has vehemently denied any involvement and accused Canada of harboring separatists, taking diplomatic measures to protest the accusations.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will be significantly reducing its Canadian staff in India, according to Minister Marc Miller. The IRCC staff is being downsized from 27 employees to just 5, as reported by CIC News. Miller reassured clients in India and Canadians with family and friends in India that Canada will continue to accept and process all temporary and permanent resident applications.
However, the reduced number of staff is expected to have short-term repercussions. To mitigate the impact, IRCC plans to adjust the workload for Visa Application Centers (VACs), which already process the majority of applications from India, although some work will have to be done via email.
The slowdown in visa processing for Indians looking to come to Canada adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing diplomatic dispute between the two nations, with potential implications for individuals and families on both sides seeking immigration and travel opportunities.
