A Captain’s Goodbye: Aaron Finch Announces Retirement from International Cricket
Australian men’s Twenty20 captain Aaron Finch, known for his adventurous batting style, has retired from international cricket after captaining the side in a record-breaking 76 T20 matches.
In an interview with cricket.com.au, Finch pointed out the importance of providing the new captain and opening batsman enough time for the 2024 T20 World Cup, starting in June in West Indies and USA.

“Whoever takes over the leadership of that team, and as the new opener, you have to give them enough time and space to work in those roles and give them a great opportunity to make the team their own over the next 18 months. I’ve been fortunate to play for 12 years, and I think the team is now in a really good position for me to move on,” Finch said.

Finch’s last appearance for Australia was in the T20 World Cup 2022 match against Ireland in Brisbane. He retired from ODI cricket in September 2022 due to difficulty in recovering after a Big Bash League game. At 36 years old, he felt it was the right time to retire and didn’t want to continue playing for personal gain.
Aaron Finch is a top-order batsman and a capable fielder, known for his aggressive and dynamic batting style. The veteran cricketer retired as Australia’s most-capped T20I player, having played 103 matches and a record 76 matches as captain.
Finch made his international debut in T20 cricket in 2011 and has since established himself as one of the most prolific T20 batsmen in the world. He holds several records, including the highest individual score in T20 international cricket by an Australian, and the fastest century in T20 international cricket by an Australian.
In addition to his international career, Finch has also represented several teams in T20 leagues around the world, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), and the Big Bash League (BBL) in Australia.
In the IPL, he represented Delhi Daredevils (2011-12), Pune Warriors India (2013), Sunrisers Hyderabad (2014), Mumbai Indians (2015), Gujarat Lions (2016-17), Kings XI Punjab (2018), Royal Challengers Bangalore (2020) and Kolkata Knight Riders (2022).
