After Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping to skip G20 summit. Will it affect India?
Written by Sanjay Kumar
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s decision to skip the upcoming G20 Summit in India, with Premier Li Qiang set to represent China instead, has raised questions about its impact on the host country. It’s important to note that leaders missing G20 Summits is not unprecedented, and various leaders have had valid reasons for their absence in the past.
“The Chinese President is not traveling to India for the G20 Summit. Premier Li is likely to represent China at the Summit,” according to reports.

Xi Jinping’s absence, along with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s decision to also miss the summit due to his focus on Ukraine, may raise concerns, but it should not necessarily reflect negatively on India. The G20 Summit in Delhi is a gathering of leaders and delegates from 40 countries, including the 20 member states, and the level of attendance at such global summits can vary from year to year.
In this case, Xi Jinping’s absence is reportedly due to other commitments, including the East Asia summit in Jakarta. This situation is not dissimilar to 2021 when President Xi didn’t attend the G20 Summit in Italy due to China’s COVID-19 restrictions.
It’s crucial to understand that there has been no official confirmation from China or India about who will represent Beijing at the G20 Summit, and this decision may not necessarily reflect any negative sentiment towards the host country. The G20 Summit has seen variations in attendance at the Heads of State or Heads of Government level over the years, and leaders often have competing demands on their time.
In summary, while the absence of President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin from the G20 Summit in India may raise questions, it is not uncommon for leaders to miss such summits for various reasons. The success and outcomes of the G20 Summit will depend on the discussions and agreements reached among the participating countries and their representatives, regardless of the specific leaders in attendance.
