Air India plane returns to Delhi after Ukraine closes airspace

An Air India plane took off for Ukraine on February 24 to repatriate Indians from the eastern European nation, which is now facing the Russian offensive. However, as Ukraine said that it had closed its airspace due to Russian military action in its eastern regions, an Air India aircraft traveling to Ukraine has returned to Delhi. Thousands of Indians are waiting to return home from Ukraineamid during a conflict with Russia. After a NOTAM, or notice to airmen, was delivered to all planes flying to Ukraine, the Air India flight opted to return to Delhi.

At about 7.30 a.m., Air India flight AI 1947 took off from Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) towards Boryspil International Airport in Kyiv. According to flight monitoring service FlightAware, the flight is expected to arrive in less than six hours. In the meantime, a Ukraine International Airlines aircraft from Kyiv arrived in Delhi at 7.45 a.m. on 24th February. “The flight carried 182 Indians, the bulk of whom were students. A few extra flights have been added to the plan “STIC Group Director Anju Wariah said.
The group is the General Sales Agent (GSA) for Ukraine International Airlines in India. Following weeks of escalating tensions, Russia declared a military operation against Ukraine on 24th February. Flights of civil aircraft within Ukraine are “limited due to potential hazard for civil aviation,” according to a “warning to airmen” issued by Ukrainian authorities.
The Air India journey on Thursday was the airline’s second journey to transport Indians back from the eastern European country. The first journey, which took place on February 22, returned roughly 240 Indians. Air India said on February 19 that three flights would be operated between India and Ukraine on February 22, 24, and 26. In Ukraine, over 20,000 Indians are pursuing their MBBS degrees. Around 150-200 people return to India every day.
Indians in Ukraine were advised to leave the country temporarily by the authorities. It requested “all Indian students” and “Indian nationals whose stay is not deemed necessary” to leave Ukraine temporarily. It had advised Indian students to contact their student contractors for updates on charter flights and to keep an eye on the Embassy’s Facebook, website, and Twitter accounts for more information.
