Russia-Ukraine war: Apple halts product sales in Russia
By Sanjay Maurya
Apple Inc. halted sales of the product in Russia following the country’s invasion of Ukraine, saying the company is with “all those who suffer as a result of the violence.” The iPhone maker announced on 1st March that it has halted exporting items into the country’s sales channel last week, ahead of pausing sales. It’s also removing the RT News and Sputnik News apps from App Stores outside of Russia, and in Ukraine, it’s blocked traffic and live-incident capabilities as a “safety and precautionary step” for the country’s inhabitants.

The action followed a request by Ukraine for Apple to stop selling products in Russia, with Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov saying the move could help turn Russian youth against the invasion. He also called on the company to stop its local App Store. For the last some years, Apple has operated an online store specific to Russia, as well as an app store tailored to the country. This isn’t the first time Apple has halted its product sale and service. Due to economic turbulence and currency fluctuations, Apple temporarily halted sales in Turkey last year.
In recent days, Apple has restricted its Apple Pay service and other online services in Russia. Another prominent American company, Nike Inc., has also halted sales in Russia, starting on 1st March that it “cannot guarantee delivery of items to clients.” Following news of the move in Russia, Apple shares fell to session lows before recovering some of their losses. On 1st March, the stock fell 1.2 percent to $163.20.
In a statement, Apple said, “We are gravely worried about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.” “We’re assisting humanitarian operations, giving relief for the escalating refugee situation, and doing whatever we can to support our regional teams.”
The Cupertino, California-based company also said that it would continue to assess the situation and that it is in contact with government officials about the steps it is taking. “We stand with all those who cry for peace across the world.”
