Asteroid 22 RQ, almost as big as aircraft, headed towards Earth today
A massive asteroid, almost as big as aircraft, is approaching Earth. Scientists have warned that today this asteroid may hit the Earth. It is not known where this asteroid will hit. However, there is little chance of it entering the Earth’s atmosphere. Nevertheless, everyone is being alerted as a precaution.
NASA has said that Asteroid 22 RQ will come closest to Earth at a distance of 3.7 million km but will miss. NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office, however, warned that asteroid 22 RQ, which is 84 feet wide, is roughly the size of an aircraft.
According to a report, asteroid 22 RQ was discovered for the first time on September 1, 2022. It belongs to the main Apollo group of asteroids. In order to monitor asteroids, NASA also maintains a NEO Observations Program that aids in the recording, monitoring, and characterize close to 90% of the NEOs (near-Earth objects) that are almost 140 meters or larger in size.
Near-Earth objects (NEO) is a common name for various kinds of asteroids, comets, and meteoroids.A smaller asteroid can be seen travelling between Earth and the Moon several times a month, according to NASA, the US space agency. Meanwhile, meteorites, small pieces of asteroids, and comets, which are often no less than 3 feet in size, can collide with the Earth’s atmosphere and explode in it. This phenomenon happens almost daily.
Additionally, NASA started the DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) programme last year. The program is designed to aim at planetary defense against near-Earth Objects. In 2013, an asteroid about 20 meters in diameter entered Earth’s atmosphere over the Russian city of Chelyabinsk. It exploded when it was still in the air, releasing energy similar to 500 kilotons of TNT. Fortunately, it exploded about 30 km above the ground and did not cause direct impact damage.
If we look back in history, 65 million years ago an asteroid about 10 to 15 kilometers (6 to 9 mi) in diameter struck Earth in what is now Mexico. The impact killed 70% of all species on Earth, including the dinosaurs. An impact of that size would have had a devastating effect, and the geological record gives us some clues as to what happened.
