Canada has revealed its plans to introduce a “Digital Nomad Strategy,” offering a temporary arrangement for foreigners seeking employment opportunities in the country. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser announced that this strategy will permit workers employed by foreign companies to work and stay in Canada for up to six months. Moreover, if these individuals receive job offers while in the country, they will have the opportunity to extend their stay in Canada. Fraser emphasized the positive impact this strategy will have on local communities, as these workers will contribute to the country’s economy through their spending.
To address Canada’s skills shortage, the federal government has introduced three new initiatives that were unveiled during a technology conference attended by Minister Fraser. These initiatives are part of the government’s broader “tech talent strategy” aimed at attracting skilled individuals from abroad. One of the initiatives involves the development of an immigration stream, set to be established by the end of the year, which will enable highly talented individuals to work for tech companies in Canada, regardless of whether they have a job offer. However, the specific eligibility criteria and the number of individuals to be admitted through this stream were not clarified during the conference.
Additionally, the government will create an “innovation stream” under its international mobility program. This stream will cater to skilled workers in select in-demand occupations or those destined to work for companies that align with the government’s innovation goals. While the details regarding the occupations and the specific companies were not provided, this initiative aims to attract skilled workers who can contribute to Canada’s innovation-driven economy.
Furthermore, the government’s third program focuses on attracting talent from the United States. By July 16, a new open work-permit stream will be introduced, allowing 10,000 American H-1B visa holders to come and work in Canada. The program will also extend study or work permits to the family members of these visa holders, providing them with an opportunity to accompany and support their loved ones in Canada.
