CPL to launch 10 over cricket tournament ‘The 6ixty’ in August with ‘special rules’
By Sanjay Maurya
The 6ixty, a T10 tournament, will be introduced by the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) organisers. The 10-over-per-innings match, which will only have six wickets per innings, is a collaboration between the Caribbean Premier League and Cricket West Indies. The first edition of the tournament will take place from August 24 to 28 at Warner Park in St. Kitts and Nevis. Up to 6 CPL men’s sides and 3 CPL women’s sides will compete in the 6IXTY’s debut season.
The 6IXTY was unveiled to the cricket world in a video message by legendary Chris Gayle on June 22.

The format is predominantly a T10 competition but features many notable differences:
- Each batting team has six wickets, rather than ten
- Each batting team has 2 PowerPlay overs. They can unlock the third PowerPlay by hitting 2 sixes in the first 12 balls. This extra PowerPlay over can be taken at any time between 3-9 overs.
- Teams will bowl five consecutive overs from each end, rather than switching ends after each over
- A team member is taken off the field for the final six balls if teams do not bowl their overs in the given time.
- Fans will be able to vote for a ‘mystery free hit’ via an app or website
Legendary cricketer Chris Gayle has been roped in as the brand ambassador for the Sixty Ball League and top-rated players will be part of the inaugural edition of the 6IXTY.
The tournament will begin in partnership with Cricket West Indies, which has become the first full-member board to create a T10 competition. CPL CEO Pete Russell explained, “CPL is privately owned: we have an acceptance agreement with them [CWI] and they own a very small share.” “This league is different because they have a majority share and the CPL is there to run the event and manage it for them.”
CPL CEO Pete Russell said, “This is an extremely exciting time for both CPL and Cricket West Indies as we construct a tournament that will bring cricket fans closer to the game.” “A tremendous tournament for the Caribbean will feature world-class men’s and women’s cricketers, and this paired with cutting-edge innovations marks a terrific moment for all lovers of West Indian cricket.”
