Delhi airport launches RFID-enabled tag to help flyers track luggage
A Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID)-enabled personal baggage tag, “Bag Tracks”, is a first-of-its-kind facility in the country that will share real-time details of when and on which belt the passenger’s luggage is arriving, has been introduced at Delhi Airport. According to a statement released on Wednesday (June 2), the tag will provide passengers with real-time information on when and on which belt their check-in luggage will arrive at the terminal.

The Delhi airport, according to its operator GMR Group-led DIAL, is the first Indian airport to offer this service. The BAGG TRAX tags will be commercially available for travellers at the Delhi airport soon. BAGG TRAX tags are currently only distributed to select frequent flyers at Terminal 3 as part of a pilot project. Once commercially available, flyers can buy it in the departure sections of any of the terminals at the Delhi airport, it noted. DIAL has launched another customer-friendly project that will dramatically improve the airport’s passenger experience.
How does it work?
According to the statement, passengers can purchase this tag at the Delhi airport, scan the QR code on it, and register it on the website. “All a passenger has to do when the tag is registered is tie it or place it in their check-in luggage,” it said. Passengers will begin receiving SMS alerts with baggage details on their registered mobile number once their bags arrive at the Delhi Airport, according to the statement.
“They will receive a text message on their phone notifying them that their luggage is ready to be picked up at the allocated baggage belt,” it said. Flyers will be able to purchase the tag once it is commercially available in the departure section of any of the Delhi airport terminals, according to the report.
DIAL CEO Videh Kumar Jaipuriar said that passengers will no longer have to wait endlessly for their luggage to arrive on the baggage belt, as they would already know where the luggage was at any given point of time. “They could have used that time to take care of other needs. This facility will also help in decongesting the crowd near the baggage belt. Delhi Airport is a pioneer in technology use and the launch of Bag Tracks is yet another technology-driven initiative of DIAL to deliver an enhanced passenger experience.
