Elon Musk, following the rebranding of Twitter as “X,” tweeted that the social media platform had reached a new all-time high number of users in 2023. The graph shared in the tweet indicated a user count of 541 million for X. However, skepticism arose as experts questioned Musk’s ability to lead a social media platform effectively.

In a subsequent tweet, Musk clarified that the chart covered data from January 1, 2023. According to his figures, the number of X users had grown from 531 million to 541 million within a span of seven months. However, Musk did not specify whether this referred to the total number of accounts or the count of active users on a daily or monthly basis. Back in May 2022, just after he began the Twitter acquisition process, the platform had 229 million monthly active users, as reported by Reuters.
Contrasting Musk’s claim, the German data-gathering platform Statista reported Twitter’s monthly active users as 335 million users as of December 2022.
Since acquiring Twitter, Musk has implemented significant changes to the platform, including discontinuing the legacy verification program and introducing a paid Twitter Blue subscription for “verified users” with a blue tick.
The most recent and profound transformation was the rebranding to “X,” a move that, according to CNBC, represents Musk’s ambition to turn Twitter into an all-encompassing “everything app.” Musk has expressed interest in developing X into something akin to China’s WeChat, which serves multiple purposes, including messaging, food ordering, and payments.
In an attempt to address declining ad revenue and advertisers’ departure due to lax content moderation, Musk appointed Linda Yaccarino, a former NBCUniversal advertising executive, as Twitter’s chief executive in June of this year.
Regaining advertisers is crucial for X as the platform still faces negative cash flow despite numerous cost-cutting measures, such as significant layoffs.
Unfortunately, Musk’s efforts to attract advertisers might not yield quick results. Recently, the platform faced renewed scrutiny after reinstating the account of a right-wing influencer who had posted a disturbing image of a toddler being tortured, as reported by the Washington Post.
Critics, like Harvard leadership expert Bill George, argue that Musk is “totally out of his element” when it comes to managing Twitter. George points out that Musk’s takeover lacked a clear roadmap, making the rebranding to X seem impulsive and potentially alienating users. Moreover, George criticized Musk’s relaxed content moderation standards, which exposed users to harmful content, including racism, anti-Semitism, misogyny, and anti-LGBTQ+ material.
Although Musk’s actions after taking over the platform seem downright incompetent at best and downright incompetent at worst, ignoring the platform entirely could be a mistake. The richest man in the world has found huge success in other ventures like Tesla and SpaceX, albeit in completely different domains.
Musk’s brother, Kimbal Musk, acknowledged in a 2021 interview with Time magazine that while Elon is a “business savant,” empathy might not be his strong suit.
