How a Google Engineer Rakes in $150,000 Working Just 1 Hour Daily

A Google software engineer belonging to the Gen Z demographic has disclosed that despite dedicating only one hour per day to work, he manages to accumulate an annual income of $150,000, which is approximately INR 1.2 crore. This young professional, who goes by the pseudonym Devon, shared with Fortune that he has never felt the need to engage in a full day’s work.
Interestingly, Devon’s situation gets even more intriguing as he has also secured a sign-on bonus and anticipates a year-end bonus.
According to Devon’s account to the media outlet, he deliberately exerts minimal effort during his working hours, reserving his mental faculties for pursuits that truly captivate his interest. In addition to his role at Google, he is collaborating with a fellow tech-savvy friend to establish their own company.
In Devon’s official capacity, he is expected to spend his days coding for the renowned tech powerhouse. However, when contacted by the media outlet, he openly admitted to not having yet opened his laptop for the day.
In response to a query about potential concerns regarding missed communications from his manager, he nonchalantly conveyed that such an occurrence wouldn’t be catastrophic. He affirmed that he would simply address it later, possibly during the night.
Devon shared his modus operandi with the media, revealing that he kickstarts his week by dedicating a considerable amount of time to coding for a specific task before submitting it to his manager. This approach, as he put it, essentially guarantees him a smooth work trajectory for the remainder of the week. Typically, his day begins around 9 a.m., involving a morning routine of getting ready and having breakfast. He then works until 11 am or noon, after which he transitions to focus on his startup until 9 or 10 pm.
Drawing parallels with his own experience, Devon acknowledged that he aligns himself with the cohort of tech workers who are, to some extent, remunerated for a less intensive workload. He mentioned that a staggering 97 percent of Google’s workforce regard the company as an excellent workplace—a sentiment that is shared by merely 57 percent of employees in an average U.S. company. Google is renowned for its comprehensive range of perks, distinctive campus featuring amenities like bicycles, gyms, complimentary meals, and notably high salary offerings.
Devon’s disposition toward his work trajectory was shaped by his initial internship experience with the company. He clarified that his intention was not to slack off but rather to strategically understate his efficiency.
“If I had the inclination to engage in extended work hours, I would have chosen a startup,” he articulated. He further elaborated that many individuals opt for Google due to its harmonious balance between work and personal life, coupled with the accompanying benefits. While other companies like Apple might attract software engineers with their brand allure, they often require long hours of commitment. In contrast, Google’s workforce generally recognizes their roles as employment rather than a consuming endeavor.
