Indian Cricket Team Selection Criteria: Yo-Yo Test Reintroduced along with Dexa Scan
Following a high-profile BCCI review meeting, the Yo-Yo fitness test was once again included in the eligibility requirements for selection to the Indian cricket team as of January 1, 2023.
The meeting, which had been postponed ever since India lost in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in November, was finally held in the presence of the BCCI secretary Jay Shah, the organization’s president Roger Binny, the captain Rohit Sharma, the coach Rahul Dravid, the NCA’s VVS Laxman, and the selector Chetan Sharma.
Dexa (bone scan test), in addition to the Yo-Yo test, is now a requirement for selection. The requirement to play a “substantial domestic season” in order to qualify for national selection was also agreed. This is because emerging players frequently choose the IPL’s white-ball format over red-ball cricket because of the greater financial rewards.
“To be chosen for the national squad, the emerging players must compete in a significant domestic season. The customised roadmaps for the primary pool of participants will now use the Yo-Yo Test and Dexa as selection criteria.
The NCA would collaborate with the IPL franchisee to track the targeted Indian players competing in the IPL 2023, according to Shah in the BCCI announcement, “bearing in mind the men’s FTP and preparations for the ICC CWC 2023.”
Running at escalating speeds between markers spaced 20 metres apart is required for the Yo-Yo test, an aerobic endurance fitness test. During Virat Kohli’s time as India’s captain, the test was launched, and the passing score first stood at 16.1, before rising to 16.5.
After the World Cup, the whole selection committee was fired, but Sharma’s attendance at the meeting on Sunday has also garnered notice. For the record, he and Harvinder Singh, another member of the dismissed panel, have both reapplied for the position.
The BCCI stated in a statement that the meeting also covered the schedule for the 2023 World Cup in India. Along with the schedule for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, it said, “the issues of player availability, workload management, and fitness parameters were also reviewed at length during the meeting.”
Given that players like Deepak Chahar frequently experience injuries, the fitness of the Indian cricket team has been a source of concern. JaspirtBumrah, a top pacer, has also been side-lined for a long period of time with a back issue.
What is DEXA?
DEXA scans can help determine a person’s bone density, water content, lean muscle mass, and body fat percentage. Given that the test was implemented together with the Yo-Yo test, the players’ fitness standard will undoubtedly be difficult to meet.
The BCCI will reportedly keep a careful eye on the players who are prone to injury as well as their physical condition.
The roadmap to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and player availability, workload management, and fitness standards were all extensively reviewed during the conference, according to a BCCI announcement.
