Kerala becomes India’s first & only state to have its own internet service
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday (July 14) said Kerala has become the first and only state in India to have its own internet service. According to a report in news agency PTI, the announcement came in the wake of the Kerala Fiber Optic Network Ltd, an ambitious IT infrastructure project of the Kerala government to make the internet accessible to all in the state, receiving the Internet Service Provider (ISP) license from the Department of Telecommunications.

The chief minister said that with this, the project, envisaged to bridge the digital gap in society, can commence its operations. “Kerala becomes the only state in the country with its internet service. The Kerala Fiber Optic Network Ltd has received the ISP license from the Department of Telecommunications (Government department) India. Now, our prestigious KFON project can kickstart its operations of providing the internet as a basic right to our people,” Vijayan tweeted.
It should be emphasized that the KFON programme will give Below Poverty Line (BPL) families and 30,000 government workplaces access to free internet, according to PTI. Notably, the previous Left government had declared internet connection as a basic right in 2019 and launched the INR 1,548 crore KFON project. Kerala was the first state to declare access to the internet as the basic right of citizens.
Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited, which oversees the project, has invited Expression of Interest (EoI) from local Internet Service Providers who are capable of providing last-mile connectivity. “At first, the plan is to provide connectivity to 100 eligible families in each assembly constituency. It would be scaled up later. We are almost reaching our target of establishing high-speed internet connectivity in 30,000 government institutions,” said K-FON head Santhosh Babu.
As per the plan, each family that will get a free connection will be able to access up to 1.5 GB of data per day at a speed of 10 to 15 MB per second. Tenders have been floated to identify potential local Internet providers. The beneficiaries will be identified by the respective local bodies and the same will be handed over by K-FON to the local service providers for establishing connectivity.
